So, this month we’re collaborating with Indie Memphis to bring local films to the museum on Thursday evenings. Last week we had “The Best of Indie Memphis Shorts: Part I”. This was (not surprisingly like its title suggests) some of the best shorts that have screened at the Indie Memphis Film Fest over the past couple years. Les Edwards (from Indie Memphis – who put the whole program together) was there to introduce the films and he gave the Brooks a really nice shout out for programming films you can’t see anywhere else in Memphis. What can I say? We try. Also, most of the filmmakers were in the audience and did an informal sort of Q&A after the films.
This Thursday at 7:30 we’ll have “The Best of Indie Memphis Shorts: Part II”, which will include one of Craig Brewer’s shorts “Resolutions of a Complacent Man”, Kaleo Quenzer’s “Central Garden”, John Michael McCarthy’s “Elvis Meets the Beatles”, Ognian Bozikov’s “Doppelganger”, and “The Morning Ritual” by J. Lazarus. We’ll try to do another informal discussion after the films like last week.
The last part of the local film series with Indie Memphis is August 30 at 7:30pm. We’re going to screen three folk-art films by the internationally celebrated, self-taught “Arkansas auteur” Phil Chambliss. If you didn’t get a chance to see his work last year at the IM Festival, then you have got to see it this time around. He has really developed a cult-following, and you’ll know why after you see these films.
So anyway, hope to see some of you there. Oh yeah, tickets are $5 for members, $7 for not-yet members and you can them online at brooksmuseum.org or at the door the night of the films.
The Brooks is going to host the hottest party of the year Saturday, August 18th starting at 7pm and going ’til late… It’s the Got Soul? Gossett Avant-Garde Casino Party! It’s an event that (anyone who has attended will agree) you end up looking forward to the whole year. It’s cocktails, dancing, a buffet dinner by Wally Joe, and real casino tables from Harrah’s. Last year’s party was based on the Annie Leibovitz: American Music exhibit with a “Party Like a Rock Star” theme and was so fun.
The Got Soul? theme this year celebrates the end of the “Summer of Soul”, so dress in your best 70s chic and show your soul, dancing to music by the band 1-900. The party is open to Avant-Garde members – a group for the young and young at heart. Call us at 544-6200 or visit www.brooksmuseum.org if you want to join Avant-Garde or get your tickets to the party. See you there!
